What is Root Canal Treatment(RCT)?
Root canal treatment is needed when an injury or a large cavity damages the tooth. The most common causes of tooth infection are, cavities occurring due to plaque accumulation, broken tooth, gum diseases, etc.. These issues can cause pulp infection and the person will experience extreme pain at times. It is advisable to see a dentist immediately if you experience a toothache or gum pain.
We, at Sri Aadinath Dental Clinic, offer you the best Root canal treatment to repair and save a tooth that is badly decayed or becomes infected. Our experts provide extremely specialized procedure, during which the nerve and pulp are removed and the inside part of the tooth is cleaned and sealed well. We guarantee you the most painless and reliable treatment for your aching tooth and that too, at the most reasonable prices.
Reaching the root
Initially, we use local anesthesia to the infected tooth and the surrounding areas to make it numb(insensitive).
Then we drill an opening through the cap or the crown covering the surface of the tooth to reach to the pulp chamber.
Removing the Infected Tissue
We then use special files to clean out the infected and unhealthy pulp from the canals. This procedure does not cause any pain as the area is already insensitive due to the anesthesia, and the tissue that is removed is dead.
Once all the infected and dead tissue is removed, the canals are disinfected using disinfectants. The canals are then washed and cleaned using irrigation method and the unwanted debris is removed. After that we shape the canals with fine instruments.
Filling the Canals
We then fill the canals with a permanent material known as gutta-percha.
This helps to keep the canals free of infection or contamination.
Rebuilding the tooth
Finally, the canals are sealed. For this, a temporary cover material is used which acts like a seal and is placed above the gutta percha. This covering material is kept in place until the tooth receives a permanent filling or a crown. A crown, sometimes called a cap, looks like a natural tooth. It is placed over the top of the tooth.
Extra Support
In some cases, we insert a post into the root next to the gutta percha to give the crown more support.
The Crowning touch
Thereafter, we cement the crown in place so that it is fixed well in that position.
ASK QUESTION
No. With the use of modern rotary techniques and today's available gadgetry, RCT is a painless procedure, as reported by most of the patients.
No. Cavities within the crown just need a filling. RCT is required only when the cavity extends deep into the root.
Mostly patients experience pain in the decayed tissue. A few patients may even experience wearing of tooth when RCT is needed.
No. With Advanced Instrumentation, RCT can be completed in 1-2 visits. However, in few situations like abscess (accumulation of pus in the tissue), it may need more visits.
The only alternative for RCT is extraction. And compared to that, RCT is much more economical.
Yes. With suitable medication, RCT can be successfully carried out in all these conditions safely.
What about pain after RCT? It takes some time to heal. In a few cases, there might be some sensitivity in the gums of teeth which would be settled in a few days.
We advise you not to chew anything hard using the newly treated tooth as it takes some time for it to fully restore the structure.
If treated properly and restored appropriately, RCT treated teeth usually last as long as natural teeth.
However, follow up appointments should not be missed to evaluate your root canal treated teeth periodically once in 6 months or in a year.
