What to expect during infancy?

What is an impacted tooth/Impaction?
An impacted tooth is a tooth that, for some reason, gets blocked while it is erupting (pushing) through the gum into your mouth. Sometimes a tooth may be only partially impacted, meaning it has started to break through.
An impacted tooth can be painless. You may not even realize it is there in such cases, it is only discovered during an X-ray at the dentist's office.

What causes an impacted tooth?
In general, a tooth becomes impacted when your mouth doesn't have enough space for it. This can be the result of genetics or orthodontic treatment.
Which teeth are most often impacted?
Wisdom teeth are usually impacted. They are the last teeth to grow in and usually begin to come in between the ages of 17 and 21. They are also called as third molars. They may become impacted because there is not enough space in your mouth for them, which sometimes cause pain. A wisdom tooth also might be trying to come in sideways. Or, it might be tilted in your jaw.
What treatment do we provide?
You can sometimes relieve minor irritation by rinsing with warm salt water. But if the pain continues, do visit us. Initially, we will examine your teeth and take an X-ray of your mouth to determine if an impacted tooth is causing your symptoms.
Waiting and monitoring
If your impacted tooth isn't causing any symptoms, we may suggest a wait-and-see approach, instead of surgically removing the tooth. We will regularly monitor it to see if any problems develop.
Surgery
If you're experiencing pain and other unpleasant side effects from an impacted tooth, or if the impacted tooth is suspected to have a negative effect on other teeth, we recommend to extract it out. An impacted tooth can lead to an infection called pericoronitis. If untreated, this infection can spread to the throat or into the neck. Such severe infections require surgery only.
At times, impacted tooth may not bother you or affect nearby teeth. In this case, we will not give any immediate treatment but we will recommend that the tooth be taken out to avoid future problems. Often, it is better to have your wisdom teeth taken out before you turn 21. The surgery usually is less complicated. The tissue and bone also heal better.
Tooth extraction surgery is usually done in 30-40 minutes which means you can go home the same day. Before removing the tooth, we will discuss the procedure and the type of anesthesia we will use. We advise you not to eat anything for six hours before surgery. Also, someone should be with you to drive you to the appointment and drive you home as you should not drive after the surgery.

Impacted teeth are not always a problem, and in some cases, there's no need to treat them. At other times, however, they must be removed to prevent infection, damage to other teeth, or other complications. Regular dental checkups from an early age can help us identify impacted teeth early and offer a treatment plan when necessary.Â
When the impacted tooth is taken out, the symptoms will go away. Recovery may take 7 to 10 days.
There is no way to prevent an impacted tooth. You can prevent cavities by brushing and flossing.

Since impacted teeth will never break through the gums, you won't be able to clean or care for them. This can lead to many dental problems like cavities, decay and gum diseases. It also can change the way your teeth come together.
Wisdom teeth can also lead severe infection affecting your throat and causing pain. An impacted tooth can push on the neighboring teeth. This can lead to tooth movement and crowding of nearby teeth. Impacted teeth can cause cysts (unwanted growths) in the jaw which can damage the roots of nearby teeth or destroy bone.
After the surgery you may have swelling of the cheeks and jaw. It may be hard to eat certain foods. However, these side-effects will go in a week or so.
You may use over-the-counter medication like aspirin for a temporary relief from mild to moderate tooth pain. However, aspirin should not be given to children under the age of 18. Ice may also help by reducing inflammation, or you can try rinsing warm salt water around your mouth, which can relieve pain.
When an impacted wisdom tooth tries to come in, the flap of gum on top of it can become infected and swollen. This can cause wisdom tooth pain and also you might feel pain in nearby teeth, or in the ear on that side of your face. If you are experiencing any such feelings, visit your dentist at the soonest.
